The Spitzbuam FALL DOWN TOUR! - September Update Greetings all - Herby, Paul, Pete, Frank and Ceasar (and me) are all set for the busy season and looking forward to seeing many of you again.
First some very sad news, Walter Ziemann one of our founding members passed away on August 31, taken too soon.
When we first started the band in 1979 it was Walter on guitar, Herby on drums and me on accordion.
Around 1984, Walter got a job fixing Titan missles (the ones carrying nuclear warheads) which took him out of town (not too many missle silos on Long Island).
He returned to the area about a year later - in the meantime Paul had joined as our guitar player, so Walter rejoined us as our bass player until about 1996, when he moved to
Arizona to work at a Satellite company. He retired about 3 years ago and shortly after was diagnosed with cancer which he fought until succombing last week.
Walter did make a final appearance with the band at last year's Bavarian Festival - joining us for 2 days on guitar along side Paul and Ceasar.
Walter was a kind soul and good friend.
We will miss him and send our condolences to his wife Fran, his 2 children and 2 brothers and their families.
We kicked off the season over the Labor Day weekend at Kolping on Hudson, in Montrose, NY. Its a beautiful location, the weather was perfect and a lot of people
turned out to enjoy the day. We were glad to be back for the event after a hiatus of a couple of years!
Coming up on September 6th and 7th we'll be in Putnam Valley playing the German Clubs Octoberfest for the first time - looking forward a good couple of days
under the big tent!
Herby, Paul and I are in the hood (Ridgewood) Friday 9/12 - at Gottscheer Hall
- followed by the full band heading out east on Sunday 9/13 to Peconic for an afternoon at the Greenport Brewery. The brew all the beer right there, food is good
and nice open field to kick back and relax.
The Steuben Parade kicks off at noon on Saturday 9/20 - Come into the city and support the German American Community - lots of groups from Germany will be participating as well.
The next day on Sunday 9/21 we'll be at our usual spot in the tent at Ompahfest at Plattduetsche Park the following day Sunday 9/21
- a 50 piece brass band from Ramsau, Germany - plus The Foehrer Musik Freunde, The Austrian Boys, Bavarski and Johnny Koenig.
The following weekend 9/27 and 28 we head west to Chester, NJ for their Octoberfest and car show. There's an apple picking farm across the street -
head over there, pick a bushel and then come over to the Octoberfest for a brat and beer.
Event is sponsored by the Lions and proceeds support their charitable activities.
We'll be back in the Hood for our usual performances in October as the NY Spitzbuam Xpress Stammtisch and Manor Octoberfest.
Check out our shedule for full details ..
Hope to see you on the road! Ferdinand
The Spitzbuam FALL DOWN TOUR! - October 8th Update Greetings all - 1st update on the goings on for this season (amazingly I actually had the schedule updated before the season began)
- and Sophia has been pushing out the weekly updates via Facebook and Instagram - which I still haven't really figured out ..
This year we kicked off the season at Gottscheer Hall - where Herby, Paul and I started it all about 45 years ago (its really scary to type that) ...
We're about half way through with great gigs at the Steuben Parade Octoberfest on Summer Stage in Central Park (we're grateful to be back there 2 years in a row)
and Ompahfest at Plattduetsche Park (we've been there for years now).
We were back at Chester again this year - another event we've been at for a long time,
and then this past weekend where we were doing Holy Octoberfests in Glen Cover and Yonkers;
a great Saturday Night at Plattduetsche Parkb, capped off with our 2nd year at the Masonic Park in Tappan.
The "Lite" version of the band is in the middle of our "Residency in the the Hood" at Stammtisch and Manor Octoberfest.
On Saturday October 12th we're back at Plattduetsche Park for our 2nd Octoberfest weekend gig - last Saturday had great weather, great crowd
and to top it off the Mets won against the Phillies - they lost on Sunday - but 1 out of 2 in Philly is not bad - back to Queens!
Check out our schedule for the rest of our performances for the year - we're also back at Harvest Moon Farms in North Salem, NY for 2 days this year 10/26 and 10/27.
Happy Oktoberfesting! Ferdinand
The Spitzbuam FALL DOWN TOUR! - September 19th Update We're coming off a great weekend - last Saturday we were on Summer Stage in Central Park, NYC - at the Octoberfest following the annual Steuben Parade.
Great facility - lots of happy people drinking lots of beer - and the nation Masskrugstemmen competition sponsored by HofBrau Beer.
Melina did her classic "I Love German Boys" plus a brand new song - "I Love Octoberfest". Many thanks to the Parade Octoberfest committee for having us
and to the stage crew who did a tremendous job making us sound very good! That video board with our logo on it was pretty cool too (see facebook!)
The following day, on Sunday - we were at Plattduetsche Park in Franklin SQ, LI for OmpahFest - lots of people, lots of bands (including a bunch from Germany),
lots of brats (and other goodies) and GREAT GREAT weather made for a tremendous event.
This weekend we're off to Chester, NJ at their Annual Oktoberfest and Car Show - we're there both days, Saturday and Sunday, joined by the Edelweiss Passaic
Schuhplatter Dancers. A couple of big tents, a good selection of beer, the Chester Lions cooking the food, Jamie the Pretzel Girl wandering the grounds with massive
pretzels for sale and lots of nifty classic cars - a great way to spend the weekend ... Alstede Farms is right across the street -
so you can start there and do your fall farm stuff - then head over to the Oktoberfest.
